This version of Old Maid’s Puzzle is based on the Drunkard’s Path block. According to Brackman it was published under the following names: Wanderer’s Path in the Wilderness, Farm and Home 1888; Crazy Quilt, The Woman’s Century; Drunkard’s Path and The Wonder of the World,  The Ladies Art Company; Robbing Peter to Pay Paul, Ruth Finley’s Old Patchwork Quilts and the Women Who Made Them; Solomon’s Puzzle and Drunkard’s Trail, Woman’s World; Old Maid’s Puzzle, The Country Home 1933; Endless Trail and Crooked Path, Nancy Page, 1934; Country Cousin and Boston Trail attributed to Nancy Cabot; World’s Wonder, Nancy Cabot; and The Pumpkin Vine by Myron and Patsy Orlosfsky in Quilts in America.

Last week we started looking at the Old Maid’s Puzzle pattern. This week we’ll look at more quilts with the same pattern name, but a different geometry.  According to Barbara Brackman, this nine patch block was published under the name Old Maid’s Puzzle by the American Farmer in 1895. It was published as Jacks on Six by Ohio Farmers in 1894, Double X #1 by Ladies Art Company before 1895, Three and Six by Nancy Cabot in 1936 and Kindergarten Block by Needlecraft Supply Company c1938.

Notes on the pattern. According to Barbara Brackman this block (#1317) was published as: Old Maid’s Puzzle by the Ladies Art Company by 1895; Hour Glass by Grandma Dexter; and School Girl’s Puzzle by Needlecraft Supply in 1936.

This version of Old Maid’s Puzzle was published as Crosses and Losses by the Ladies Art Company; Fox and Geese by Carrie Hall in The Romance of the Patchwork Quilt; and Bouncing Betty in Pictorial Review. Barbara Brackman found no record of it being published as Old Maid’s Puzzle.
