Swellendam is the third oldest town in South Africa (after Cape Town and Stellenbosch and the Drostdy Museum’s main building was built by the Dutch East India Company in 1747 to serve as residence and official headquarters for the Landdrost. The museum has several excellent quilts in their permanent collections and the museum now serves as the host site for an annual exhibition of contemporary quilts produced by members of the Hilltop Quilters, led by Hilltop Quilt Shop owner Carool Johnson.

"This information originally gathered in 2010 by Marsha MacDowell, Michigan State University Museum, during research on quilt history in South Africa that was supported by a fellowship from the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at University of Nebraska-Lincoln with additional in-kind support from Michigan State University Museum."
