Small but well cared-for collection of quilts, including an exceptional whitework quilt that, according to museum research notes, was made in the Netherlands during 1790 for Johannes Christiaan van Schouwenburg and later given to Dr Swinems, second wife of Andries van Schouwenburg Some also on display in the Freshford House Museum, one of the few houses of the upper middle class of the Edwardian Period that still exists in Bloemfontein.

NOTE: According to a museum article dated 1995, “The Orange Free State Quilters Union is compiling a list and photographic record of quilts made before 1960 in private and museum collections in the province.”

"This information originally gathered in 2010 by Marsha MacDowell, Michigan State University Museum, during research on quilt history in South Africa that was supported by a fellowship from the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at University of Nebraska-Lincoln with additional in-kind support from Michigan State University Museum."
