Flat Textiles Collection
The flat textile holdings include important groups of 18th and 19th century quilts, woven coverlets and embroidered samplers, as well as a wide range of household textiles.
Notable items from the textile collection include:
- Counted Cross Stitch Patterns
- Nearly 200 quilts, with examples of all styles popular between the late-18th century and the present, including three pre-Civil War quilts said to have been *made by slaves
- Over 100 woven coverlets, including overshot, double cloth, summer/winter and jacquard weaves
- Over 70 samplers, including one commemorating the Richmond theatre fire of 1811 and another the 1824-25 visit of the Marquis de Lafayette
- 19th-century draperies used in Virginia homes

The mission of the Richmond History Center is to engage, educate, and challenge a diverse audience by collecting, preserving, and interpreting Richmond's history.
Vision
The Valentine Richmond History Center’s vision is to be recognized as the premier source for experiencing Richmond’s history—using its past to inform the present, and to shape the future. For over 100 years, the Valentine Richmond History Center has celebrated one of America’s most historic cities. It has collected more than a million objects, preserved photographs, textiles and artifacts and interpreted 400 years of Richmond’s history through items of everyday life. It is this tradition that will guide the History Center's future.
