Material Witnesses: Quilts and Their Makers

Material Witnesses: Quilts and Their Makers features textiles made as close as [[Virginia]] and as far away as the Polynesian Islands. [[Colonial Williamsburg]] curators have uncovered the stories of the past through the study and research of these quilts and coverlets, some of which were created as early as the 1830s.

Like the hieroglyphics of Ancient Egypt, quilts can tell us a lot about the past and the people who created them. Sometimes the meanings are obvious, while other textiles reveal their tales more quietly, their stories teased out only through determined research into the genealogical roots of the makers.

About the Exhibit

*Includes 11 quilts, the earliest of which is dated 1835
*Includes 3 woven coverlets, the earliest of which is dated 1834
*Includes 1 embroidered coverlet
*Exhibit closes in April of 2012

The exhibit is funded by Mary and Clinton Gilliland of Menlo Park, Calif., through the Turner Gilliland Family Fund of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

The collection policy is documented in a written collection concept. As the main collections are here: History and folklore of the valley, and party everyday aesthetics, tradition and social change.

Specific collection areas are: farming and agriculture, mountaineering and tourism, housing and households, clothing, costume and textile manufacture, trade, crafts and folk art, traditions (masks, "Lord Grenadiers"), faith and worship (vestments, Volksreligiösität), regional iconography (paintings , advertising, posters)."

Museum of Decorative Arts

The Museum of Decorative Arts is one of the oldest of its kind in Germany. It possesses one of the most important collections of skilled craftsmanship. The museum can be found at two sites: Kulturforum Potsdamer Platz and Köpenick Palace.

The collection

"This museum collects works of skilled craftsmanship ranging from post-antiquity to the present. It encompasses all the styles and periods in art history and includes silks and costumes, tapestries, decorative wainscots and furniture, vessels made of glass, enamel and porcelain, works in silver and gold as well as contemporary crafts and design objects. Most of the materials involved are of great value. Many items were commissioned by representatives of the church, the royal court and members of the aristocracy.

A tour of the spacious building at the Kulturforum Potsdamer Platz takes visitors through 7,000 square metres of exhibition room revealing the historical development and great variety of applied arts and crafts from the Middle Ages through to Art Nouveau and up to the present day.

Treasures from medieval churches, including the famous Guelph Treasure (Welfenschatz) and the "Baptismal font of Emperor Barbarossa" illustrate the excellent skills of goldsmiths at that time, as does the representational silverware which once belonged to councillors of the wealthy town of Lüneburg.

On the ground floor the highly sophisticated lifestyle at the courts of Italian nobles during the Renaissance is highlighted with examples of bronzes, tapestries, furniture, Venetian glass and decorated glazed earthenware (majolica). The upper floor is reserved for the treasures from cabinets of curiosities and baroque art collections: faience work and glass from central European courts as well as the homes of patricians, Meissen and Berlin porcelain, sophisticated pieces of furniture, decorative tableware and accessories ranging from rococo and classicism to historicism and Art Nouveau.

The lower ground floor contains the so-called "New Collection" where arts and crafts of the twentieth century are complemented by examples of industrial products which are far more dominant in modern life than hand-made objects."

They decided to collectively archive the designs they produced. In order to complement their own personal collections they added designs from other countries, and from earlier times. The original purpose of this design collection was to inspire artists and designers of the time by introducing them to new and different patterns and styles. This long established history of sharing ideas continues today in the form of the textile research room, the S.U.D. More than 3 million samples are housed here, spanning three centuries of design history. Decorative Art Museum, Industrial Museum, Local History or Museum of Fashion, the Museum of Printed Textiles is situated somewhere between memory and creation. To accomplish it's mission the Museum's first priority is to preserve the history and practice of printed textiles. Secondly, to share this with as many people as possible. Focusing on every aspect of the art and craft of textile design, the Museum's rich history in qualitative as well as quantitative terms is it's strength. The Parc de Wesserling is an eco-museum set on the former Wesserling industrial site. The Textile Museum occupies a building that dates to 1819 which was originally used in the textile manufacture industry. The Textile Museum aims to educate visitors about the French textile trades of the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum includes not only exhibits, but also hands-on workshops in spinning, weaving, dyeing, etc. Beyond the museum are eco-friendly park-like grounds.

The Quilt House (Maison du Boutis), is located in the Calvisson plain Vaunage, near Nîmes in the Gard (France. It presents a unique collection of old quilts in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Following the expansion of the collection, the museum presents a collection of embroidered wedding quilts. Also, after its exhibition in London and Florence, the Quilt House's medieval "Tristan Quilt" is back in Calvisson. It will be on display at the Quilt House for some time, though it will eventually tour America and Japan.

"There are 3075 catalogued objects in the collection assembled between 1906 and 1945. The majority are textiles, such as pieces of cloth, ribbons and various tablecloths. The collection also includes a number of wickerwork items, such as baskets and dishes and boxes made of birchbark. The majority of the wooden objects are boxes, dishes, various household objects and scale models."

= FOREIGN COLLECTION =

"The 1200 or so objects mainly originate from Russia, Sweden, Norway and France. The foreign collection was meant for comparison and to serve as an example to domestic producers. The oldest part, the French collection of 619 objects, was bought by Vera Hjelt as early as 1889 during a journey she made to the Paris Exposition. Nowadays this collection of some 420 objects includes, in addition to industrial products, a collection of objects made of pulp, which is something unusual.

The Russian collection is the most varied and systematic in terms of content. It was assembled by Lauri Mäkinen during his journey to Southern and Central Russia in 1912. The collection was augmented by later purchases at the 1913 St. Petersburg Home Industry Exhibition. The collection includes, for example, wooden household dishes, vases, shelves, objects made of birchbark, boxes as well as miniatures of household objects and utensils. There are also many textiles.

The Nordic collection has been accumulated very sporadically. Most of the objects originate from Norway, such as gobelins and objects decorated with leaves. The Swedish items are mainly textiles, samples of cloth as well as ribbons and lace. The collection only includes a few objects from Denmark."

= THE COLLECTIONS TODAY =

"The collections of the museum now consist of 17 000 objects. The basic collection is made up of the old surviving collections that have been moved to Jyväskylä. It is our aim to add to the collection with careful selection and planning. From the present day we keep essential phenomena of the handicraft culture for the collection. Quality is more important than quantity in the collections at the moment.

The museum’s reference library consists of more than 5000 publications on handicraft, the craft industry and just about everything made by hand. The collection of the library also includes Finnish and foreign magazines. Most of the material is in Finnish."

"The MAK possesses an unusually rich and diverse collection of textiles whose objects date from late antiquity to the present and range from European to Oriental and East Asian items. This is why only an alternating selection can be presented here annually, even though these items are, particularly in Europe, exemplary of the art history of textiles and for their workmanship and ornamentation techniques.

One of the collection’s focal points is its early acquisition of a group of Coptic garments, that is, textiles of late antiquity excavated from Egyptian graves. Highly valuable medieval textiles are represented by characteristic richly embroidered pieces. They share their origins in professional workshops north of the Alps, and miniature as well as monumental painting inspires their wealth of figurative and ornamental forms. Also exceptional in quality are the late medieval wall carpets or carpet backings, with depictions of the so-called “wild people.”"
